AVCHD conundrum

Recently I have just bought a Sony HDR-SR7 handycam. It has 60GB Hard-Disk drive inside and that mean I do not need to carry multiple tapes, nor memory stick to shoot pictures. AVCHD is relatively a new format in video compression. Being a new format, that means:

  • Limited software support: Software supporting this format are: Sony Vegas, Pinnacle, Ulead, TMPGEnc, Elecard, PowerDVD version 7 Deluxe.
  • Limited video editor support: As above, according to forum posts Sony Vegas the best choice of editor for editing AVCHD content. In my test of the demo application, it failed to recognise .MTS or .M2TS file formats.. bastard! Edit: Formatted PC.. and it is working now! WooHoo!
  • High PC requirement: To encode / decode high compressed content :(

Despite above short-comings with AVCHD, it shoots high-definition video. Quality is amazing when playback on a HDTV!
